Tips on Preventing Recurrence of Plantar Fasciitis
If you have ever had plantar fasciitis, you can be at risk of recurrence. The good news is that this risk can be greatly reduced with some common sense precautions.
First and foremost, if you have been prescribed a pair of custom orthotics, make sure to wear them. This doesn't necessarily mean all the time, but it does mean whenever possible. We recommend that orthotics should be worn at least seventy-five percent of the time.
Next, make sure you do some maintenance light stretching, especially once the healing has occurred and the pain has subdued. A night splint can be important to assist you in doing this. The point of this continued stretching is to then give back some increased flexibility to the plantar fascia, so that when placed in a difficult position, it tends to gently stretch rather than tear.
Unfortunately, if acute pain recurs, you should contact your podiatrist immediately for continued evaluation and treatment.
