Tips on the Foot, Knee and Lower Back
Not surprisingly, poor foot function can affect the joints above. When the foot and ankle are out of alignment, the knee, hip and back can also be affected. Just like the importance of a level foundation of a house, the parts of the body above the foot and and ankle are negatively impacted by poor foundation.
The ankle joint is composed of three bones: the talus, tibia, and fibula. The ankle joint is held together by ligaments. Poor foot alignment can cause a wearing down of the joint cartilage, ligament failure ankle instability and pain that can become severely disabling.
Likewise, the knee can be affected because of poor foot and ankle alignment leading to cartilage injury and poor shock absorption.
Lower back pain also is related to poor foot and ankle position. Again, inadequate shock absorption by the joints below, and foot and ankle malposition can lead to pain in the lower back while bending, lifting, and even walking.
If you are experiencing any discomfort at the joints above your feet and ankles, it is recommended to have that checked for possible poor musculoskeletal alignment by a podiatric physician in order to receive complete and comprehensive care.
