Understanding Neuroma & Neuropathy
What Are Neuromas and Neuropathy?
A neuroma is a thickening of the tissue around a nerve, most often between the third and fourth toes. It can cause sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot, and many people say it feels like standing on a pebble.
Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves in the feet. It can cause burning, tingling or numbness and is common in people with diabetes. Because numb feet may not feel a cut or blister, neuropathy raises the risk of wounds and infection.

Neuroma & Neuropathy: Symptoms & Causes
Understanding what you are feeling, and why, is the first step toward the right care.

- Tingling, burning or numbness in the toes or feet
- Pain that eases when you take your shoes off

Causes & Risk Factors
Common Causes
Neuromas are often linked to irritation or pressure on a nerve in the forefoot. Neuropathy has many possible causes, and diabetes is one of the most common.
Risk Factors
- Diabetes
- Tight or narrow shoes and high heels
- Foot deformities such as bunions, hammertoes or flat feet
- Repetitive stress on the ball of the foot
- Poor circulation
When Should You See a Doctor?
Make an appointment if you have burning, tingling or numbness in your feet, or forefoot pain that keeps coming back. If you have diabetes and notice a wound, a change in skin color or new numbness, call our office promptly. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.
Diagnosis
Dr. Haspel examines your foot, reviews your symptoms, health history and footwear, and may use the advanced vascular and neurologic testing available in our office to check nerve function and circulation.
Treatment Options
Conservative Treatment
Care often starts with footwear changes, padding and custom orthotics to take pressure off the nerve. For neuropathy, regular foot exams and protective footwear help protect your feet, and our practice participates in the Medicare Diabetic Shoe Program.
Surgical Treatment
When a painful neuroma does not improve with conservative treatment, Dr. Haspel may discuss surgery. Minor procedures are performed in the office, and complex procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
Ongoing Care & Prevention
Ongoing Care
Neuropathy is usually managed over time. Regular foot exams help catch small problems before they become wounds.
Prevention Tips
- Wear shoes with a roomy toe box and good support
- Check your feet every day if you have diabetes or numbness
- Avoid walking barefoot
- Wear custom orthotics if they are prescribed

What does a neuroma feel like?
Many people describe a sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot, or a feeling of standing on a pebble. Symptoms often ease when you take off your shoes and rub your foot.
Is neuropathy related to diabetes?
Diabetes is one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy, but it is not the only one. People with diabetes should have their feet checked regularly by a podiatrist.
Do you test for neuropathy in the office?

Will I need surgery for a neuroma?
Not necessarily. Dr. Haspel looks first for conservative solutions, such as footwear changes, padding and custom orthotics. Surgery is considered only when conservative treatment has not relieved the pain.
