Understanding Tendonitis
What Is Tendonitis?
Tendonitis is irritation and inflammation of a tendon, the strong band of tissue that connects muscle to bone. In the foot and ankle, it often affects the Achilles tendon at the back of the heel or the tendons along the inside and outside of the ankle.
Tendonitis often starts with overuse. Without care, an irritated tendon can become more painful and may be more likely to tear.

Know the Signs
Tendonitis: Symptoms & Causes
Understanding what you are feeling, and why, is the first step toward the right care.
Common Symptoms
- Pain along a tendon that worsens with activity
- Stiffness, especially in the morning
- Swelling or tenderness at the back of the heel or ankle
- Pain when rising up on your toes or climbing stairs
Causes & Risk Factors
Common Causes
Tendonitis usually develops from overuse or repetitive stress, such as a sudden increase in running or walking.
Risk Factors
- A sudden increase in activity or training
- Tight calf muscles
- Flat feet or other foot structure problems
- Unsupportive footwear
- A previous foot or ankle injury
When Should You See a Doctor?
Make an appointment if tendon pain lasts more than a few days, keeps you from your usual activities or keeps coming back. If you felt a pop or cannot put weight on your foot, call our office promptly. Same-day visits are often available after an injury. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.
Diagnosis
Dr. Haspel examines the tendon, checks your foot structure and how you walk, reviews your activities and footwear, and may use imaging to look for a tear or other injury.
Treatment Options
Conservative Treatment
Rest, activity changes, supportive footwear, bracing and custom orthotics may reduce stress on the tendon and help it heal. Dr. Haspel uses custom orthotics for many biomechanical conditions, including Achilles tendon problems.
Surgical Treatment
When a tendon problem does not improve with conservative treatment, or a tendon is torn, Dr. Haspel may discuss surgery, which is performed on an outpatient basis.
Recovery & Prevention
Recovery
Tendons heal slowly. Returning to activity gradually helps lower the chance of the problem coming back. Recovery varies from patient to patient.
Prevention Tips
- Increase activity levels gradually
- Stretch your calves before and after exercise
- Wear supportive shoes for your sport
- Wear custom orthotics if they are prescribed

Frequently Asked Questions About Tendonitis
Answers to common questions about care for tendonitis at our Clifton, NJ office. Have another question? Our staff is happy to help.
What is the difference between tendonitis and a tendon tear?
Tendonitis is irritation and inflammation of a tendon. A tear is damage to the tendon fibers, which can happen suddenly or after long-term irritation. An exam helps tell the two apart.
Can I keep exercising with tendonitis?
Pushing through tendon pain can make the problem worse. Dr. Haspel can help you adjust your activity and plan a safe return to exercise.
Can orthotics help with tendonitis?
They may. Dr. Haspel uses custom orthotics for many biomechanical conditions, including Achilles tendon problems, to reduce stress on the foot and ankle.
How long does tendonitis take to heal?
It varies. Many cases improve over several weeks with rest and treatment, while long-standing tendon problems can take longer.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Most major insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare. Coverage varies by plan, so please call our office with questions about your benefits, referrals or pre-certification.
