Understanding Foot Deformities & Clubfoot

What Are Foot Deformities and Clubfoot?

A foot deformity is a problem with the shape or alignment of the bones and joints of the foot. Some deformities are present at birth, such as clubfoot, in which one or both feet turn inward and downward. Others, like bunions, hammertoes and flat feet, develop over time.

Not every deformity causes pain, but some can affect how you walk and which shoes fit, and may become more painful over time.

Foot Deformities & Clubfoot: Symptoms & Causes

Understanding what you are feeling, and why, is the first step toward the right care.

Common Symptoms

  • A foot that turns inward, outward or downward
  • Pain when walking or standing
  • Trouble finding shoes that fit
  • Uneven shoe wear
  • In children, frequent tripping or falling

Causes & Risk Factors

Common Causes

Some foot deformities are present at birth. Others develop over time from inherited foot structure, muscle and tendon imbalance, injury or arthritis.

Risk Factors

  • Family history of foot problems
  • Birth deformities such as clubfoot
  • Arthritis or a previous injury
  • Ill-fitting shoes
  • Nerve or muscle conditions

When Should You See a Doctor?

Make an appointment if a foot deformity is painful, is getting worse or makes walking or finding shoes difficult. Parents should schedule a foot exam if a child’s foot looks unusual, or if a child often trips or can’t keep up with normal activities. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.

Diagnosis

Dr. Haspel examines the foot, watches how you or your child stands and walks, reviews symptoms and footwear, and may use imaging to see the position of the bones.

Treatment Options

Conservative Treatment

Shoe therapy, custom orthotics and braces can support the foot, improve alignment and relieve pain. Treatment depends on the type of deformity and the patient’s age.

Surgical Treatment

When conservative treatment does not relieve a painful deformity, Dr. Haspel may discuss surgery. Birth deformities are among the conditions he treats surgically, and complex procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

Ongoing Care & Prevention

Ongoing Care

Many foot deformities are managed over time. Orthotics and footwear may need to be adjusted as your feet, or your child’s feet, change.

Tips for Healthy Feet

  • Wear supportive shoes that fit the shape of your foot
  • Replace worn-out shoes
  • Wear custom orthotics or braces as prescribed
  • Schedule a foot exam for any child with foot concerns
