Understanding Foot & Ankle Injuries
Common Foot & Ankle Injuries
Foot and ankle injuries can result from simply tripping on the stairs, stepping on a foreign object while barefoot or playing your favorite sport. They can be very painful and disabling. We treat a wide variety of injuries, including foot and ankle fractures, ankle sprains and tendon problems.
Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are an extremely common injury. They range from joint damage with swelling, instability and pain to more severe damage, such as torn ligaments, bruised cartilage and broken bones.
Fractures
A broken bone and a fracture are the same thing. A fracture can be displaced (fragments out of position), non-displaced, hairline or open (compound), where a fragment has broken through the skin.

Know the Signs
Foot & Ankle Injuries: Symptoms & Causes
Understanding what you are feeling, and why, is the first step toward the right care.
Common Symptoms
- Pain, swelling or bruising after an injury
- Trouble putting weight on the foot
- An ankle that feels unstable or gives way
- Pain along a tendon that worsens with activity
Causes & Risks
Common Causes
Injuries often come from trips and falls, sports, or stepping on something while barefoot.
Why Early Care Matters
As many as 80% of untreated sprained ankles result in prolonged symptoms, such as chronic pain or ankle instability that makes a person prone to repeat injury and arthritic changes later in life.
When Should You See a Doctor?
If you have injured your foot or ankle, see a podiatrist for treatment. In the meantime, remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. An open fracture needs immediate care. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.
Diagnosis
Dr. Haspel examines the injury and uses imaging to determine whether there is a fracture, dislocation or torn ligament.
Treatment Options
Ankle Sprains
Immediate treatment includes rest, ice, compression and anti-inflammatories. Early evaluation and active treatment help avoid chronic pain, instability and arthritis of the involved joints.
Fractures
Broken bones are usually splinted first to prevent movement and protect the surrounding soft tissues. A displaced fracture may need to be set. Most fractures can be managed in a cast without surgery, and even toe fractures are treated, using a mesh tape that holds the toe in place.
Surgical Treatment
Some fractures are difficult to set and need surgery, and open fractures need immediate surgical management because they can easily become infected.
Recovery & Prevention
Recovery
Recovery depends on the type and severity of the injury. Dr. Haspel will explain what to expect and when you can return to activity.
Follow-Up Care
Follow-up visits check healing and help prevent long-term problems such as chronic ankle instability.
Prevention Tips
- Wear supportive shoes for sports and activity
- Avoid walking barefoot where you could step on something
- Get repeat ankle sprains evaluated
