Understanding Skin Conditions

Skin Conditions We Treat

Growths and Possible Skin Cancer

Have you noticed a growth or a discoloration on your foot or ankle, or has a growth changed shape or color recently? Come in for an evaluation so we can determine whether it needs treatment. We see these conditions every day in our practice.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are growths on the bottom of the foot caused by a virus. You may notice little black dots in the wart, which are the blood vessels that nourish it.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection affecting the web of skin between the toes and the soles of the foot.

Know the Signs

Skin Conditions: Symptoms & Causes

Understanding what you are feeling, and why, is the first step toward the right care.

Common Symptoms

  • A new growth, spot or discoloration on the foot or ankle
  • A growth that changes shape or color
  • Rough growths on the bottom of the foot, sometimes with black dots
  • Itching, burning, pain or scaling between the toes

Causes & Risk Factors

Common Causes

Plantar warts are caused by a virus that you can pick up anywhere you walk barefoot, such as a local pool, karate or dance studio, locker room or pedicure salon. Athlete’s foot is picked up by walking barefoot on contaminated floors and objects, and it can pass from person to person.

Risk Factors

  • Walking barefoot in shared spaces
  • Feet that stay damp
  • Non-breathable shoes and socks

When Should You See a Doctor?

Make an appointment if you notice a growth or discoloration on your foot or ankle, if a growth changes shape or color, or if a wart or rash is spreading. Don’t put yourself at risk by ignoring these signs. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.

Diagnosis

Dr. Haspel examines the skin of the foot and ankle, asks about how the area has changed and recommends treatment or further evaluation when needed.

Treatment Options

Growths and Discoloration

After an evaluation, Dr. Haspel will explain whether the area warrants treatment and what your options are.

Plantar Warts

There are several treatments for plantar warts, including topical immunotherapy. The type of treatment depends on each patient’s needs. Because plantar warts can spread easily, it is best to have them treated before they multiply.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot can be treated with anti-fungal medications.

Recovery & Prevention

Recovery

Recovery depends on the condition and the treatment. Dr. Haspel will explain what to expect.

Follow-Up Care

Some conditions, such as plantar warts, may need more than one visit.

Prevention Tips

  • Keep your feet dry and wear cotton socks
  • Choose breathable shoes
  • Wear shower shoes in locker rooms and at the pool
