Understanding In-toeing & Out-toeing

What Are In-toeing and Out-toeing?

In-toeing, sometimes called pigeon-toe, means the feet point inward when a child walks or runs. Out-toeing means the feet point outward. Both are common in young children.

The turning can come from the foot, the shin bone or the thigh bone. Many children outgrow it, but some need treatment, especially if it causes pain, frequent falls or trouble keeping up with activities.

Treatment Options

Conservative Treatment

Monitoring as Your Child Grows

Regular follow-up visits track how your child’s walking changes over time, so treatment can be adjusted if needed.

Many children do, as their bones grow and rotate. An exam helps tell whether your child’s in-toeing is likely to improve on its own or needs treatment.

Mild out-toeing is common in toddlers and often improves. Out-toeing that is severe, painful or on only one side should be checked.

Dr. Haspel sees infants, children and teens. Schedule an exam at any age if you notice your child’s feet turning in or out, frequent falls or foot pain.

Some developmental foot conditions can be treated with custom foot orthotics. Dr. Haspel will explain whether orthotics are right for your child.
